Retirement communities are different from retirement homes in the following ways.
- Retirement homes are generally single buildings where there are no socializing amenities provided whereas retirement communities may feature golf courses, active adult retail stores, medical facilities, swimming pools etc.
- Retirement communities offer a variety of housing options. Retirees unlike in a retirement home can choose from single family homes, condominiums, etc.
- There are many Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities that provide assistance to people of all income levels.
- Retirement homes may or may not be built in warmer climates whereas retirement communities emerge in areas of warmer climates that presents convenient living conditions for the seniors or retirees.
